Genitourinary Cancer

Our care goes far beyond what other centers can offer, from diagnosis to treatment and even after treatment is over, we are here for you every step of the way. The Georgia Cancer Center provides the area’s only multidisciplinary genitourinary cancer program offering:

• Advanced treatments: Our robotic surgery program has performed over 1,200 unique and complex cases in the past ten years. And our newest procedures can help spare healthy surrounding tissue and focus on removing only cancerous tissue.
• Multidisciplinary care: We combining the expertise of nationally recognized medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, working with our urologists, endocrinologists, nephrologists, and other specialists, to give you the best outcome for your cancer diagnosis.
• Tumor board: We meet twice a month to discuss new cases and to deliver recommendations for diagnosis and treatment. Our team also performs a screening for potential enrollment in our clinical trials.
• Clinical trials, as a research institution, we are always looking to develop new and effective treatments for cancers of the urogenital system.

We diagnose and treat male and female patients with genitourinary cancers, including those of the:

• Adrenal glands
• Bladder
• Kidney and renal cells
• Urinary tract (including urethra and ureter)

We also treat conditions in males including:

• Prostate
• Penis
• Testicles

We offer state-of-the-art care that includes surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments for genitourinary cancers, some of these procedures are done nowhere else in Georgia or South Carolina.

Surgery

Our surgical team is skilled all performing all kinds of procedures to get you cancer free from traditional open surgery to minimally invasive procedures, if recommended.  We perform:

• Robotic radical prostatectomy, in which the prostate gland and margins of surrounding tissue are removed with optimal preservation of sexual and urinary function.
• Robotic or open partial nephrectomy with fluorescent image guidance to allow precise removal of kidney tumors without removing the neighboring healthy kidney tissue.
• Laparoscopic and robotic nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy for removal of larger kidney cancers as well as cancers of the renal pelvis and ureter without large, painful incisions.
• Cryosurgery, a procedure that kills kidney cancer or prostate cancer by freezing malignant cells.
• Robotic radical cystectomy for removal of the bladder in cases of advanced bladder cancer.
• Neobladder or continent diversion for creation of a new bladder for drainage of urine without an external stoma.
• Transurethral resection of bladder tumors, incision-free surgery to remove less aggressive tumors of the bladder.
• Ureteroscopy and laser ablation of tumors in the renal pelvis and ureter, preventing the need to remove the entire kidney.

Chemotherapy & Radiation 

Chemotherapy or radiation treatments may be part of your treatment plan for your particular cancer. We provide:

• Intravesical chemotherapy, in which chemotherapy is placed directly in the bladder to kill bladder cancer cells.
• External radiation therapy, including Intensity Modulate Radiotherapy (IMRT) for precise delivery of radiation.
• Internal radiation therapy, in which small radioactive seeds are implanted directly into the tumor.
