Nephrology

The Section of Nephrology staffs an inpatient renal and transplantation service at Augusta University Medical Center. Consult services at Augusta University Medical Center and the VA Medical Center cover the spectrum of acute and chronic renal failure, acid-base/electrolyte disorders, immunologic renal disease, hypertension and renal artery disease.

Outpatient activities include the hemodialysis center and clinics in renal transplantation, peritoneal dialysis follow-up and general nephrology.

We strive to provide a comprehensive clinical and educational service, providing a wide range of outpatient services including primary care to sub-specialty medicine. We specialize in the health care of adult men and women both on a primary and referral basis. The Medicine Practice Site services are designed to follow patients through a variety of health care needs while providing patients and families with a Patient Family Centered Care philosophy.

Urology provides the highest quality patient care in urologic oncology (cancer of the prostate, bladder, kidney, ureter, testis, or penis), pediatric urology, kidney stones, erectile dysfunction, female urology, renal transplantation (urological aspects), male infertility, incontinence, neuro-urology and general adult urology (prostate enlargement or BPH, prostatitis, urinary tract infections, urinary obstruction, urinary discomfort, scrotal problems).

In addition to traditional medical and surgical therapies, Augusta University Medical Center offers leading-edge technology by fellowship-trained surgeons such as laparoscopic nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, laparoscopic prostatectomy, nerve-sparing prostatectomy, shock-wave therapy for kidney stones, laser treatment of stones or urinary tract tumors, advanced urinary tract reconstruction for both children and adults, continent diversion or orthotopic bladder replacement, and many others.

In addition to excellent patient care, Urology has strong clinical and basic science research programs in prostate cancer and andrology (male sexual function).

The Dialysis Center is directed by faculty members of the section of nephrology. Outpatient programs at the center include in-center chronic hemodialysis and home peritoneal dialysis. The chronic hemodialysis unit has 23 outpatient stations. The home peritoneal dialysis service currently supports about 40 patients. The staff of both units are specially trained to provide the full range of outpatient dialysis services to include high-efficiency hemodialysis and automated peritoneal dialysis treatments. Support staff includes a social worker, dietitian and reimbursement specialist.

The inpatient hemodialysis service is equipped with six stations. A continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) program is in place to provide all forms of continuous critical care dialysis. The inpatient peritoneal dialysis program provides inpatient peritoneal dialysis support to hospitalized patients (CAPD, manifold, cycler). These services provide dialytic support for patients with acute renal failure and chronic dialysis patients who are hospitalized at Augusta University Health Hospitals and Clinics.

The inpatient dialysis service works closely with Augusta University Department of Surgery in the areas of kidney transplantation and vascular access surgery to provide dialysis support for patients referred to Medical Center at Augusta University.
