Hip and Knee Care

Running, jumping, walking...over a lifetime, your hips and knees bear the weight of these activities. Sometimes, the cartilage, bone or tendons of these joints can become damaged from overuse, arthritis, or injury and you can experience stiffness and pain, when that happens, come see us.

Our Approach

The orthopaedic physicians at Augusta University Health care for patients who are suffering from serious hip or knee deterioration or injury. While most cases can easily be treated in our clinic, other cases are more complex and may require the attention of an orthopaedic surgeon at our Joint Replacement Center.

Even though we offer surgical treatments, we believe in exploring conservative measures first. Non-surgical treatments, such as cortisone shots or knee gel shots (viscosupplementation), can provide temporary relief of pain and inflammation that can improve quality of life without surgery.

Non-surgical treatments

These treatments are available as non-surgical options for hip and knee problems:

  • Activity modification
  • Bracing
  • Injections
  • Physical therapy

Surgical treatments

If walking becomes difficult, you may need surgery. We tailor surgeries to meet the needs of each individual patient, carefully choosing the right implant or surgical technique for your specific injury. We treat some of the most complex hip and knee cases at our Joint Replacement Center because we have some of the best surgeons in Augusta’s river region who perform:

  • Hip Reconstruction surgery, using either Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) or open surgery to treat hip problems such as dysplasia or impingement.
  • Knee Reconstruction surgery, with MIS or open surgery to repair ACL or meniscus tears.
  • Joint Replacement, surgery to replace the entire knee or hip joint.

After your procedure you will begin regular physical therapy sessions with our physical therapists (PTs). Our PTs are specially trained to rehabilitate hips and knees so that patients can return to an active and pain-free lifestyle.
