Dr. Mabes was born and raised in Indiana. She then attended undergraduate studies at North Carolina State University with majors in Art & Design and Chemistry with plans on becoming a surgeon early on in her education. She completed medical school at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, including a one year predoctoral OMT fellowship. She then joined us for her general surgery residency at the Medical College of Georgia. She returned to Augusta with her husband and three sons to pursue a surgical critical care fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia. She has been a leader in our program for research, publications, and national presentations during her time as a trainee and is excited to continue her scholarly development as a faculty member! Dr. Mabes also brings to the department a passion for and experience in resident education and is awarded the title of Clinical Director of Surgery Resident Simulation Education, already developing a new surgical resident simulation curriculum as well as a multidisciplinary simulation curriculum this year in coordination with the state-of-the-art faculty and facilities at the Medical College of Georgia Simulation Center! Aligning with Dr. Mabes' love of teaching and passion for resident education, she is joining the leadership in our program as an Associate Program Director for the Department of General Surgery Residency.

  • Philosophy of Care

As a critical care and trauma surgeon we are tasked with not only performing surgery, but providing comprehensive care for some of the sickest patients. I believe each patient should be treated as if they were one of my loved ones, and that care extends to their families. As an academic surgeon it is our job to teach our residents and lead by example demonstrating compassion, dedication and commitment to our patients with the integration of care through an interdisciplinary process.
