The Emergency Department at Augusta University Health provides the highest level of emergency care for the Augusta, Georgia area and the surrounding 13 counties. We are the go-to hospital for emergency and critical care, providing every level of treatment to our patients including:

  • An 88 bed, state-of-the-art ED with specific areas dedicated to critical care, acute care, and pediatric care.
  • An adjoining Pediatric Emergency Department within the Children’s Hospital of Georgia (CHOG), providing advanced care for patients from birth to 21 years of age.

While we specialize in treating critically ill and injured patients, we also treat patients with any kind of urgent or emergent condition.

You never know when you’ll need to make a trip to the ED, but you can be confident that Augusta University’s Emergency Department will provide you with the excellent care you expect, ensuring the best possible outcomes no matter what brings you to us. We strive to be the "best part of your worst day".

No other hospital in the area can offer patients the comprehensive emergency care we are able to provide.

  • Emergency expertise: All of our physicians are specifically trained in Emergency Medicine. Board-certified emergency physicians work with trained emergency nurses to provide all types of urgent and emergency care.
  • Critical care transport: We provide real time direction for Emergency Services and are often involved with your care even prior to arrival to the ED. Critically ill patients arrive to our ED via ground and air transport.
  • Fast Track: Though we specialize in taking care of emergencies, we are well equipped to address minor illnesses as well. Our ED has a new, dedicated Fast Track area which allows us to more efficiently care for patients with these types of problems.
  • TeleHealth: Augusta University is the only hospital in the area providing extensive TeleHealth programs. For less urgent medical problems, you can be evaluated virtually by our ED providers via our online Direct to Consumer (D2C) platform. We also provide numerous rural hospitals within the state of Georgia the ability to tap into the expertise of our emergency physicians through real time TeleHealth support.

We are recognized for our commitment to patient care. Our accreditions let patients know that they can trust us with providing the complex care they need.

Highest Level Trauma Center

We care for more than 1,500 trauma patients each year. Emergency Department physicians work closely with the trauma team and other surgical specialists, to provide sophisticated resuscitation and definitive care to patients. Augusta University Health has the only American College of Surgeons verified Level I Adult Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center in the region.

Augusta University Health’s Emergency Department provides advanced care not available at any other local hospital. We use advanced techniques and technology including:

  • Emergency Bedside Ultrasound: We are one of the national leaders in Emergency Ultrasound. This advanced technology is used in all aspects of emergency care.  Ultrasound use decreases complications associated with medical procedures, guides resuscitation of critically ill and injured patients, and improves overall efficiency in the ED.
  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO): We have access to technologies not available at any other area hospitals including Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). EMCO is a /lung bypass machine that can add oxygen to the blood and help pump oxygenated blood through a patient’s body.  ECMO can be lifesaving in certain critical care situations.
