About
Alzheimer’s disease, and other forms of dementia, can take a toll on patients and
their families, who often struggle to assemble the expertise and resources they need
to meet the challenges neurodegenerative diseases bring. Alzheimer's disease can't
be cured, however, early detection can help patients and caregivers cope better with
the diagnosis.
The Alzheimer's Program at AU Health offers patients the ability to get an assessment done early so that
they can be seen at our Memory Disorders Clinic sooner. We are partnered with Georgia Memory Net, a statewide program dedicated to early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease
and related dementias. This allows Augusta University Health to be designated as
a Memory Assessment Center, providing advanced care to patient in the Augusta and surrounding area.

Warning Signs
Patients having serious memory problems should visit our clinic. If a patient has
had previous blood work, or CT scans, that were done within the past year, please
bring the results with you on your first visit.
Warning signs of Alzheimer's disease
There are certain signs that you, or a loved one, might be starting the early stages
of Alzheimer's. Patients may exhibit all, or some, of the following (taken from the
National Alzheimer's Association):
- Memory loss
- Difficulty with familiar tasks
- Problems with language
- Disorientation
- Poor judgment
- Problems with abstract thinking
- Misplacing things
- Changes in mood or behavior
- Changes in personality
- Loss of initiative
Diagnosing Memory Disorders
The Memory Disorders Clinic offers a diagnostic memory assessment to people who are experiencing memory problems.
Patients are first evaluated, and when appropriate, further testing will be ordered,
including:
- Labwork
- Brain imaging with MRI, CT, or PET scan
- Cognitive assessment with our neuropsychologist to determine the extent of their memory problems.
These studies help guide our clinical assessment and diagnosis. The testing will also tell whether the patients may have other underlying medical
conditions, such as depression.
After testing is complete
Patients will meet with the doctor to discuss test results, diagnosis, and treatment
recommendations, including medications. If patients qualify for a clinical trial and are interested in participating, we will also discuss this at their return visit.
