Dr. Calkins is a graduate of The George Washington University (B.A.) and Virginia Commonwealth University (M.D.). He was a resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and a fellow in Cardiovascular Diseases at the George Washington University and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Calkins spent 11 years in private practice, initially as a primary care internist and subsequently as a general cardiologist in Virginia. He served as the Medical Director of Cardiology Services in two community hospitals and as the Medical Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation Services in another during this time. He joined the medical staff at the Augusta V.A. Medical Center and the Medical College of Georgia in 2004. Dr. Calkins practiced general cardiology at the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 15 years. He was the Chief of the Cardiology section, the Medical Director of Echocardiography and the V.A. Associate Director for the Cardiology Fellowship Program. Dr. Calkins is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Echocardiography. His areas of clinical focus include general clinical cardiology, echocardiography and medical education. Dr. Calkins has participated in clinical research involving acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, noninvasive cardiac imaging, contrast induced nephropathy and thromboembolic disease. Dr. Calkins served on the ACCME/CME Committee of the American Society of Echocardiography and he is currently the President of the CSRA Chapter of the American Heart Association.

I have participated in clinical trials in the areas of acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, noninvasive cardiac imaging, thromboembolic disease and contrast induced nephropathy. I have also worked with our Cardiology fellows and faculty members to publish several focused clinical review articles were written for the busy clinical practitioner and that deal with topics that were originally called to my attention as questions from colleagues.
